On June 6th, 2016 the Joint Economic Development Committee was pleased to host Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Ms. Beverly Yee at their June 2016 Business Brunch event. The Potato Growers of Alberta and the Sugar Beet Growers of Alberta also participated and spoke to local elected officials and business leaders regarding the state of the organizations, their economic impact on the region and challenges and opportunities their member producers are faced with. Deputy Minister Yee discussed programs and priorities of Alberta Agriculture and Forestry as they relate to the Taber region and specifically highlighted the long-term goal of the department to double the contribution by agriculture and forestry to provincial GDP. This will be achieved by supporting the entrepreneurial spirit of the Ag industry through various different programs including the Ag Innovates Cooperative, Growing Forward 3, and investing in research and innovation. The event was a huge success with over thirty guests in attendance including representatives from the Town of Taber, Municipal District of Taber, Town of Vauxhall, Taber Chamber of Commerce, Vauxhall Business Society, Chinook Community Futures, Agriculture Financial Services Corporation, Lantic Inc. and Lamb Weston. This was the 4th Business Brunch event the Joint Economic Development Committee has hosted throughout the last 2 years in order to inform local elected officials, representatives and stakeholders about business issues and opportunities in the region and to open up lines of communication between government and industry.
